Boyett Petroleum
www.boyettpetroleum.com

Convenient locations, great service and gas at the lowest possible prices all contribute to the success of Boyett Petroleum. And this summer they will add a Cadillac Giveaway to an already long list of reasons to do business with them.

The Modesto based independent gasoline marketing company is a strong supporter of the BIACC, sharing a belief in the importance of fostering growth in the area. Their support translates into special benefits for BIACC members.

BIACC members receive an additional 4 cents per gallon discount over already low cardlock prices. Boyett also makes a donation to the BIACC based on member purchases.

Carl Boyett notes that, "We appreciate the support of the BIA and have a good relationship with them." Carl Boyett heads the company that was founded in 1948 when his father, Stan Boyett, along with then partner, Walt Barbour, began a chain of independent gas stations. Carl began working at the stations at an early age and in 1970 went into business with his father. He is currently president. Carl's son, Dale, began working at the stations when he was 13, and in 1993, after graduating from St. Mary's College in Moraga, he too joined the family business full time. He is currently vice president.

In the early days, Barbour's Premium Stations, as they were known at the time, gave away a car every other week. They began with Cadillacs but at later switched to Fords. The Ford giveaways only lasted a year because they figured no one cared if they won a Ford. This year, for the first time in fifty years, the Boyetts will be reviving that tradition of giving away a new Cadillac.

With future plans for aggressive growth the family owned business sells 140 million gallons of gasoline. They currently have eight stations under the name Boyett Petroleum. They have gas pumps at 22 grocery stores, most of them Kwik-Servs. Boyett is also part of the network of commercial cardlock dealers that feature the Pacific Pride label, which features over 1400 locations nationwide.

Boyett's Cardlock system offers tremendous benefits to any business with a fleet of vehicles to manage. Their twice-monthly customized billing gives a detailed history of each vehicle, including date, time and location of purchase, type of fuel, number of gallons, amount charged and name and number of the card used. They also offer the option of an odometer reading and miles per gallon.

Once a company becomes a member of the cardlock program they can purchase fuel at any Pacific Pride location. And, although they require a minimum 250 gallons per month, they do offer volume discounts for cardlock customers.

New locations in the Stanislaus include a site on the corner of Dale and Pelandale. And this summer they will be moving into Barbour's Save Center at the corner of Mitchell and Whitmore in Ceres.

Structured Interviewing Workshop

In today's highly competitive market it pays to make the right hiring decisions. The cost of re-hiring an employee with a salary of $35,000.00 per year can be over $100,000.00.

Learn How to:
· Identify and define selection standards.
· Develop appropriate interview questions.
· Conduct interviews.
· Evaluate and select candidates.

Workshop Includes:
· Two days of intense interaction.
· Development of customized selection standards.
· A library of questions.
· Review of effective probing techniques.
· Legal aspects of conducting interviews.
· Practice interview sessions.
· Leave the workshop with a ready to use finished product.

Structured Interviewing Workshop

Although it is commonly recognized that qualified employees are critical to an organization's success, the skills required to recruit and hire those individuals are often neglected. When interviewing, many people take a social approach and evaluate a candidate based on whether they like the person rather than on the individual's ability to do the job. Structured Interviewing Workshop is designed to build skills necessary for effective hiring.

The workshop focuses on the interviewer's ability to analyze three things: the open position, the candidate's experience, skills, and abilities, and the candidate's motivation to perform effectively.

By identifying and defining selection standards, the interviewer is able to develop questions designed to conduct an effective interview, evaluate, and select a good candidate. By clearly defining the requirements of the position it becomes easy to ask key questions that reveal the candidate's ability to do the job.

The workshop itself is interactive and the participant leaves with a personalized plan, ready to use and applicable to their current needs.

An excerpt from "Almond Blossoms and Fog"
An essay by Karen Moody

The San Joaquin Valley. People either love it or hate it. Looking around at this area, famous for its agriculture, I see its good side, and find, that in spite of the bad rap it sometimes gets, the valley is a place of remarkable beauty. It is a beauty that does not always smack one in the face, but rather, demands quiet exploration and discovery. My friends from the Bay Area often characterize it as too hot, too flat, too foggy, or too dry. Yes, it is flat, and depending on the season it is foggy, hot, or dry, but that is part of its charm. It is possible to look across this abundant land and see only flat, uninterrupted countryside or one can see quite a different world.

I moved back to the valley several years ago, partly because property was less expensive, but mostly because I wanted to live in the country again. I live on four and a half acres. Part of it is landscaped, or was until I got a hold of it; it takes a lot of work to keep the weeds at bay and everything alive. The other three and a half acres are in pasture. There were cows on it for a time but now it serves as a place to walk my dog.

Sometimes I am overwhelmed by the amount of time one could spend on the upkeep of a small ranchette. I have learned, however, that life is infinitely more pleasant if one enjoys the land, rather than stressing over it and, in spite of my erratic gardening habits, there is usually something colorful blooming in the garden. Daffodils and irises return every year and all I have to do is pick them to create a unique bouquet. The lilacs herald spring and give off a strong, lush fragrance. Then come the golden poppies that grow with great abandonment wherever they please. Each morning they open to greet the sun and in the evening they close ranks to rest. I feel privileged to have so many poppies decorate my yard.

Changing seasons are a treat in this flat valley. Unlike many parts of California you can actually experience transformation, and I find that as I welcome the predictable signs of spring, summer, fall, and winter, I am assured of the continuity of life. Living in the city, I knew that the seasons changed by looking at the calendar but it was not until returning here that I remembered what I was missing.

Signs of spring come early in the San Joaquin. The first thing demanding notice are the almond blossoms. The orchards turn quickly from bare trees to fields of soft color. Driving down I-5 while the hills are still green one is treated to a view across acres of almond orchards and it is easy to imagine that they are clouds settled down to earth. Moving to ground level and standing among the trees offers quite different sensations. The trees have a soft, sweet, smell, and if a breeze blows it looks like it is snowing as the petals float softly to the ground. Then the farmers start to plow and the expanses of rich earth are exposed for planting. Other trees begin to bloom and leaf out and the sky is a deep soft blue. The air is clean from the winter rains and the spring winds keep it clear. Flowers in a multitude of colors appear in gardens everywhere.

To really appreciate spring requires stopping to take notice. The almond blossoms are here so briefly that you might forget to look. Somehow that brevity creates an urgency and makes them all the more special. I find that as the years pass, I am constantly reassured by their predictable return...
